The next up: More boys basketball players to watch this season
There were plenty of talented boys basketball players who missed this season's Dandy Dozen. Here are some of the top players who were just on the outside looking in.
Players are listed in alphabetical order.
Jay Barnes, Oak Grove
Senior | Guard
Barnes averaged 16.3 points, 3.1 steals, two rebounds and 1.9 steals per game in his junior season. Barnes scored 42 points on Jan. 10 in a 88-53 win over Petal.
Barnes has received offers from Mississippi Valley State University, Southern Arkansas, Hinds Community College, Pearl River Community College and Jones College.
Dylan Brumfield, Oak Grove
Senior | Guard
Brumfield averaged 12.8 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.3 steals last season for the Warriors, who advanced to the second round of the 6A playoffs.
Devin Carter, Florence
Senior | Guard
Last season, Carter averaged 23 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.4 steals and 2.1 rebounds.
He opened the 2020-21 season with a 45-point performance against Crystal Springs.
Jamaal Esco, Murrah
Senior | Guard
Esco averaged 12 points, seven assists and three steals for last season's 6A runner up Murrah.
He has been offered by Jackson State and Pearl River Community College.
Zandon Haralson, Center Hill
Wing | Senior
The 6-foot-5 wing has gotten off to a quick start this season for the Mustangs. In two games last week, he averaged 20.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and four steals.
Josh Hubbard, Madison-Ridgeland Academy
Sophomore | Guard
Hubbard is a fiery 5-foot-11 guard who can jump out the gym and score with the best of them. His decision-making and passing ability are also impressive parts of his game. Last season, MAIS named him the 5A Player of the Year.
Hubbard has offers from Jackson State, Mississippi State and Ole Miss.
Keiveon Hunt, Callaway
Junior | Guard
Hunt is one of the best juniors in the state. His averages (13.9 points, five assists, 4.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists) don't do him justice, sharing a backcourt with the state's top player in Daeshun Ruffin.
Last season he took some attention off Ruffin and was the second option for the 5A champions.
Alex Jordan, Hattiesburg
Senior | Guard
Jordan opened the 2020 season leading the Tigers to a 64-60 upset win over Harrison Central. In the victory, he finished with 25 points, five assists and five rebounds.
Jordan has an offer from Hinds Community College.
Kaeden Laws, Center Hill
Senior | Wing
Laws was the MVP of the MAC Mississippi North-South All-Star Game earlier this fall. He opened the season with a 20-point, 12-rebound performance against Holly Springs.
Laws has played in two state championship games, and is a Arkansas Pine Bluff commit. Last season, he averaged 13.9 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.7 steals and 1.6 blocks per game.
Jonathan Lucas, Hartfield
Senior | Forward
Lucas averaged 13 points and 8.5 rebounds last season.
The 6-7 forward currently has offers from Navy, McNeese State, Jackson State, Bryant, Denver, Towson and UC San Diego.
Kedrick Osby, Moss Point
Guard | Sophomore
The 6-7 guard is garnering attention quickly in the state.
In Moss Point's season opener against St. Martin, he made seven 3-pointers and finished with 28 points, eight rebounds and two blocks, as reported by Southern Sports Platform.
Caleb Rawls, East Marion
Senior | Forward
Rawls averaged 17 points, 12 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game last season for East Marion. He opened the season with 29 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks against Petal.
He has received offers from programs such as Mississippi Valley State University, Pearl River, Hinds Community College and Bryant University.
Devin Ree, Terry
Junior | Forward
Ree is currently the top 2022 prospect in Mississippi, and the 58th-ranked junior prospect nationally, according to the 247Sports composite rankings.
The 6-8 wing can do it all. He finished his sophomore season averaging 19 points, nine rebounds, three blocks, three assists and a steal.
Ree has offers from Auburn, Georgia, Jackson State, LSU and Memphis.
Deandre Smith, Greenville Christian
Junior | Guard
Last season, Smith led the Bulldogs to a 4A championship with a 30-point performance.
He was Greenwood's second-leading scorer (11.6) as a sophomore. He also averaged six rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.6 steals.
Smith is a two-sport athlete who transferred from Greenwood earlier this fall after the school's fall sports were canceled. He's considered a three-star quarterback.
